Penthouse Apartment, Millers Point, Sydney / Interior Design & Decoration
The interior design and decoration of the apartment conveys a personalised and sophisticated feel. The design has both a European character while also expressing a uniquely refined Australian aesthetic which draws from the elements of the natural and built landscape of the surrounding Sydney Harbour.
The Penthouse Apartment, Millers Point, holds a unique position, overlooking Sydney Harbour. The brief was to design a space that celebrates the apartment’s harbour vista while creating a refuge and place of calm above the busy city. The tired original fit-out was stripped bare and re-imagined as a fluid, spacious layout with natural materiality and connection to the landscape.

The tonal and textural palette of veneer, natural timber and stone reinforce a sense of grounding and stillness, connecting with the elements of nature. Stylistically there is a refined contemporary elegance, with a layering of European furniture of muted tones and varied textures. The artworks and curated accessories also add an eclectic and unique expression, culminating in a highly personalised space.

The apartment's design demonstrates that homeliness and connection to the landscape can be achieved in an apartment setting, which is vital as cities become denser and we move away from the model of the freestanding home.

The design of the apartment provides a retreat from the city, a calm place from which to reflect and observe the city and harbour. At night the design mimics the daily transformation of the city and takes on a more nocturnal character, fostering moments of gathering and celebration.

In this project, architecture, interior design and decoration are unified and evolve together. This cohesion in the design process results in a harmonious space and contributes to the integrity and unique identity of the final design.
