There was considerable reflection upon site and context when starting this project, in order to create a space that is a celebration of the expansive Sydney Harbour setting while remaining a calm escape.
The Penthouse Apartment, Millers Point, holds a unique position, perched on the North East corner of an apartment building, overlooking Sydney Harbour. The tired original fit out, in need of renovation, was stripped bare and reimagined to suit the needs and sensibilities of the new inhabitants.
The design meets the functional requirements of the client brief to reorganise the plan, use the space efficiently and create a sense of spaciousness and ease.
Beyond the functional requirements there was a need to create not just a space to reside but a place to live and dwell. A home was created that is personal and allows for privacy while also fostering moments of gathering and celebration.
The design celebrates and draws from the context of the urban and natural landscape in creating a home in the clouds with a strong sense of place and belonging. The design has a contemporary Australian aesthetic that is simultaneously cosmopolitan and comforting. We drew from notions of prospect and refuge to create a sense of retreat while championing the senses in the experience of architecture.
The Penthouse Apartment Millers Point is a home of understated elegance, achieved through thoughtful, integrated design and high level of detail resolution and execution, which is slowly revealed as you move through the apartment. The unified approach to the architectural, interior and joinery design contribute to the sophisticated elegance through the integrity and assuredness of the materiality, details, scale and forms.
